Postgraduate Programs

Research-Based Programs

The Department conducts research-based MSc, MPhil, and PhD programs. These degree programs are conducted under the close supervision of a faculty member(s). Hence, candidates are advised to discuss with a potential supervisor before registering for a program. Each of these programs can be followed either in full-time or part-time mode.

Master of Science (MSc)

The research masters degree requires a thesis developed in close consultation with a faculty member along with a couple of advanced computer science courses. At the completion of the program the candidate is expected to make a publication either at a peer reviewed conference or an indexed journal. Duration of a typical program of study is 12 months full time and 21 months part time.

Doctor of Philosophy (PhD)

Doctoral program combines research and a dissertation advancing the frontiers of computer science knowledge. At the completion of the program the candidate is expected to make several publications at peer reviewed conferences and indexed journals. Duration of a typical program of study is 36 months full time and 60 months part time.

Master of Philosophy (MPhil)

MPhil is an advanced postgraduate research degree that leads to a PhD. All PhD candidates first register for an MPhil, which can be later converted to a PhD given sufficient research progress (i.e., after a progress review presentation). At the completion of the program the candidate is expected to make publications at peer reviewed conferences and/or indexed journals. While a candidate may complete only the MPhil, potential candidates are highly encouraged to follow the PhD. Duration of a typical program of study is 24 months full time and 36 months part time.

Coursework-Based Programs

The Department also offers professional degree programs with a major emphasis on coursework. Master of Science (MSc) and Master of Business Administration (MBA) programs are designed to provide practicing professionals with a greater depth of technical knowledge as well as exposure to emerging and niche areas. A candidate may choose to take a set of compulsories and many electives to concentrate on an area of study that interests them. Candidates also need to complete a 20-credit research module designed to enhance research skills, critical thinking, and academic writing. The program is structured as a 6 semester (2-year) degree program with each semester consisting of 14 weeks of academic activities. Lectures are held on 1-2 weekdays from 5.30pm to 7.30pm in Colombo and on Saturdays an the University of Moratuwa. Lectures are also supplemented with online interactions via Moodle, Yammer, Google Hangout, Skype, etc. In a typical study program arrangement, the first 3 semesters consist of taught course modules while the 4th and 5th semesters are a mix of taught courses and research. The final semester is used for the research project and thesis writing.
