Department of
Computer Science & Engineering

The Department of Computer Science and Engineering (CSE) of the University of Moratuwa was established in 1985 and is a pioneer in ICT (Information and Communication Technology) education in Sri Lanka. The Department offers a BSc Engineering Honours Degree specialized in Computer Science and Engineering as its flagship academic course. The intake of this program has grown steadily from 16 students in the inaugural batch to 125 per batch currently with two study streams. The graduates of this degree program are highly sought after by the industry as evidenced by the fact that typically more than 90% of students of a graduating batch get offers for employment before graduation and 100% of employment at graduation.

The Department offers two study programs within the BSc Engineering Honours Degree specialized in Computer Science and Engineering as (1) Computer Science & Engineering (CSE) Stream with 100 undergraduates and (2) Integrated Computer Engineering (ICE) Stream

with 25 undergraduates. While the long established CSE program provides the industry with its top-tier technical talent and expertise, the newly established ICE program is intended to build on the success achieved by the Department in meeting the industry need for top quality software engineers, systems engineers and network engineers, and leverage that expertise to produce the industrial computer engineers needed by the country in its national development program. Such engineers are in high demand in the ICT sector of Sri Lanka as well as in the international job market. The Department also conducts three postgraduate courses that involve both taught courses and a research thesis, namely the MSc in Computer Science (MSc-CS), the MBA in Information Technology (MBA-IT) and MBA in eGovernance (MBA-eGov). The Department also conducts research based MSc and MPhil programs.

CSE MISSION

The mission of the Department of Computer Science and Engineering is to serve society through excellence in education, research and service. We provide for our students an education in computer science and computer engineering and we attempt to instil in them the attitudes and values that will prepare them for a lifetime of continued learning and leadership. Through research the Department strives to generate new knowledge and technology for the benefit of everyone.

The mission of the CSE Department is focused on three groups:

Students

For whom we provide a deep understanding of both fundamentals and important current issues in computer science and computer engineering so that they may either obtain productive employment or pursue advanced degrees.

Faculty

For whom we provide support and material resources needed for them to develop as dedicated scholars, devoted educators and innovative researchers.

Alumni

For whom we seek to maintain productive ties in order to enhance their opportunities for lifelong learning and leadership, as well as to benefit from their skills, knowledge and experience.

CSE VISION

The Department of Computer Science and Engineering will be the most exciting place in the country and the Asian region to perform high impact research and to learn about the latest developments in the rapidly developing field of computer science and engineering.

We will become the best CSE Department by the end of this decade, as measured by:

  • The excellent preparation of our graduates for leadership in the profession
  • The quality and impact of our research and
  • The exceptional value of our service to the Nation.
